Go Kart Chassis Overview
Widely known by go kart enthusiasts is the importance of the go kart chassis.
The underlying go kart chassis provides the all important balance and stability for safety, along with traction control.
The chassis is most responsible for allowing the driver to have full control over the vehicle they are driving. It’s also important for the kart to have the appropriate chassis, paired with the right suspension and motor.
Old models of vehicles go karts have shorter chassis, attached to suspension systems that act whenever the kart is moving. The chassis and suspensions were designed to lessen the trauma that a novice driver could have while hitting the brakes.
Newer designs involve longer bars that allow the go kart to be more flexible, and to flow better with the terrain. With this structure you are able to handle the vehicle with less effort and less wear and tear on your body. These longer bodies are also more comfortable to taller men who are no longer cramped into a short frame. The vast majority of chassis used in carting today are rolling go kart chassis.
The wrong go kart chassis design will not only result in a bad go karting experience but it can also be vary dangerous. The chassis must be designed with the proper balance, wheel base width and traction to be able to navigate sharp turns with out rolling too easily. And, the top of the chassis must be able to bear enough weight to not crumple on a roll over.
The proper chassis should be strong enough to be able to handle rough terrain and strong enough to be safe on a roll over, but not so heavy that the go kart engine has to work too hard.
Because the go kart chassis is so important to the kart and to your safety, I would recommend that you do not try to build your own chassis, but instead buy a ready made chassis that is specifically designed for karting. The reward will be a satisfying go kart experience along with ensuring your safety while go carting.
Some popular chassis are the Gillard kart chassis, the CRD kart chassis, Biesse kart chassis, PRC chassis, Margay chassis, Arrow chassis, Merlin chassis, Intrepid kart chassis, Bandit kart chassis, Coyote chassis, Anderson kart chassis, and the LTO kart chassis.
