For those that may not be sure what a go kart is, it is basically a small motorized vehicle made up of the follow go kart parts:

The go kart chassis provides flexibility along with enough stiffness to allow the go-kart good traction around the track while racing through the turns.  An open chassis does not provide protection for the driver while the closed, or caged chassis will protect the driver in the event of the go-kart rolling over.

Certain karts like “shifter karts” use a manual transmission and a clutch that allows peak go kart engine performance.  These karts can reach a minimum of 160-mph.  They are definitely not “toys”.

The go kart motors, also referred to as go kart engines.  used in go karting are usually either 2-stroke or 4-stroke.  Simply explained… the 2-stroke motor is more powerful than a 4-stroke motor that is typically used in lawn mowers.

Where did this unique hobby/sport get its start?

If you’re a go-kart enthusiast or historian, you’ll remember that Art Ingels (often misspelled as Ingles) is credited with being the father of “Go-Karts”.

Ingels… a veteran hot rodder… famous for building Indy race cars at Kurtis Kraft during the early 1950’s, invented the first Go-Kart in history right out of his two-car garage in Echo Park… a community in southern Los Angeles California in 1956.

This amazing go-kart was fashioned from scrap metal that Ingels transformed into go-kart parts along with using a spare two-stroke cycle engine from the famous West Bend Company.

Art Ingels and his famous invention gained hundreds of fans and huge popularity when he tested his go-kart in the Rose Bowl parking lot.

Bored post-war veterans originally began racing these go-karts recreationally to occupy their time… but soon became addicted to the sport and its fame rapidly spread to other countries.

Tips for purchasing your own kart

If you’re looking to purchase your own kart… start looking for used karts for sale.  Sometime previous owners upgrade to fancier or more powerful karts and you might just get a great deal.

But deal or not… make certain that you write out a thorough to-do list for everything that you need/want in a kart.  There are big differences in go-karts and you need to figure out which kart will be best for you.

You don’t want to start out with problems simply because your excitement led you to taking unnecessary risks and paying for someone else’s mistakes.

Do the same type of list before purchasing a new kart.  The kart store may offer you a great package deal if he/she knows exactly what you’re looking for.  You’ll usually prevent tacking on those forgotten go-kart parts that will be quite costly when purchased separately.
